Explorer 11

On April 27, 1961, NASA launched Explorer 11, a satellite that contained the first gamma ray telescope to go to space. This marked the birth of space-based gamma ray astronomy.

Explorer 11 telescope was developed under the direction of William L. Kraushaar at MIT. It was developed in way so that it can measure the arrival directions and energies of high-energy gamma rays. The spacecraft was set on a slow motion to observe the celestial sphere because the telescope could be set to aimed properly.
